The Deal Elle Kennedy Summary

The Deal by Elle Kennedy came into my mailbox along with the rest of the Off Campus series and that was just the push I needed to read this book. Also? Spicy Booktok has kind of convinced me to try more spicy books even though typically that is NOT my wheelhouse.

Once I realized this book had a picture of a girl in her skivvies on the cover — somehow my eyes always skipped over that — I realized I couldn’t read this at work on a lunch break. Oh, no no my friends. So, in bits and pieces I read this book at home.

The Deal is about main characters Hannah and Garrett who are in a philosophy ethics class together at Briar University. There is a big test that everyone fails except Hannah who has managed to score an A Plus. Garrett sees this and begs her to tutor him as he needs to keep his grades up in order to play on the hockey team. So, Hannah and Garrett strike a deal.

She will tutor him and in exchange he will pretend to be dating her so that she can catch the eye of a football player she has been crushing on. Only, it turns out that there is some real physical chemistry between the two and maybe the feelings are actually real.

I am a little surprised at how much I liked The Deal by Elle Kennedy. Honestly you should absolutely check trigger warnings before reading — particularly has Hannah has been a victim of sexual assault in her past. I liked the vulnerability between the two leads.

We all know they’re going to get together but the way the book goes about that makes it hard to set down. Also, I loved the interactions between the hockey players. They’re a great group and this book does a good job setting up for the rest of the series which will feature various players from this book.

Both Garrett and Hannah completely won me.  At one point (just after the black moment late in the book) I was interrupted in my reading by having to serve dinner and then go to a school function and THEN my husband wanted to TALK to me!  I was so grumpy about it.

And part of it was actually because I was so concerned about these two characters and didn’t want them to be sad a second longer than necessary. (Because, in my head, if I haven’t read it yet, it hasn’t happened.  I know that doesn’t make sense.  Don’t judge me.)

That kind of reaction to a book is fairly rare for me and it’s one I crave.  I love being swept up in the story and caring about the characters as if they were real people.

It was easy to do in The Deal because both Garrett and Hannah came across as real people.  They way they speak, the way they banter and conduct themselves – it felt authentic.

I suppose one could say that both main characters came across as a little older than 20, but their backgrounds matched with that so I didn’t have a problem with it.
